Chiropractic Care Offers Benefits Beyond Easing Neck and Back Pain

13-Year old boy was headache sufferer for four years
(04/05/2010). According to a case study published late last fall in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, a course of chiropractic care was successful in completely eliminating headaches a 13-year old male patient had been experiencing at least five hours a day for four years.
“Headaches are a common disorder affecting two-thirds of the world’s population,” said Greenwood Village-based, Dr. Chris Butler, D.C., “but we are still in the dark about all the causal factors and, in many instances, the most effective treatment options, which often depend on the mechanics of the specific type of headache presented. Experts have recognized 14 distinct types of headache.”
This particular case study concerns what is know as a cervicogenic headache, likely caused by poor joint function impacting the cervical spine and causing a malfunction of the nervous system. This type of headache presents symptoms such as “recurrent moderate to severe headaches arising from the neck ...” The cervical spine most often shows reduced range of motion, which causes pain spikes with certain movements of the head and neck. The initial chiropractic examination of the patient involved in this case study noted problems with posture and range of motion, along with “subluxations” in the thoracic and cervical spine.
“A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function,” said Dr. Butler. “Many chiropractors, including myself, have special, non-intrusive technology that allows them to conduct thermal and Surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist. Because we know that the nervous system is the master controller of almost all bodily functions,” Dr. Butler continued, “we are not surprised when improvement of nervous system function contributes greatly to normal bodily function in a wide variety of areas.”
After just six weeks of chiropractic care, the patient’s posture and range of motion improved significantly. More important to the young man, he was headache free for the first time in four years. “There are certainly no guarantees with any course of care,” said Dr. Butler, who strives to keep current with the latest research and developments in health and wellness. “And every case depends on the specific factors associated with that case. More research is needed, but we see, from time to time, individual case studies that give rise to hope for many.”

Eight-Year Old’s Chronic Earaches Helped by Chiropractic Care

(12-29-2009). Chiropractic care is often thought of by the public only in terms of relief from back and neck pain, but doctors of chiropractic have long espoused the health benefits received by patients for a wide variety of ailments. “There are certainly no guarantees with any course of care,” said Dr. Chris Butler, an Englewood, CO -based chiropractor who strives to keep current with the latest research and developments in health and wellness. “And every case depends on the specific factors associated with that case. But we see, from time to time, individual case studies that give rise to hope for many.”
Dr. Butler cited a recent case study by two colleagues involving an 8-year old female suffering from chronic earaches, headaches, and sinus pain. “Aside from the common cold, ear infections are probably the most frequently diagnosed ailment among children,” said Dr. Butler. “This particular patient had undergone multiple emergency room visits, two surgeries on her ear drums and one surgery on her sinuses, and several rounds of antibiotic treatment, all to no avail.”
The parents brought the child in to see a chiropractor, and examination of the patient determined the presence of a vertebral subluxation. “A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function,” said Dr. Butler. “Many chiropractors, including myself, have special, non-intrusive technology that allows them to conduct thermal and Surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist.”
According to the case study, which was reported in the June 2009 issue of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health, . . . a surface EMG [electromyography, a non-invasive procedure] was performed utilizing an Insight Subluxation Station, in accordance with published protocols. The purpose of the test was to assess paraspinal muscle activity and compare it to published norms.
The patient was placed in chiropractic are for a total of 29 visits over a three-month period. After one month, the parents reported an absence of headaches, earaches and sinus pain, at which point the parents cancelled a third surgery that had been scheduled. Nine months after the course of care was completed, the child remained free of all her previous symptoms, as confirmed by the child’s pediatrician.
“This is just one case study,” Dr. Butler emphasized, “and more studies are needed before any absolute conclusions can be drawn. But as chiropractors, we believe that the nervous system is the master-controller of the systems and functions of the human body. It stands to reason, then, that improvement in nervous system function, which is what we do as chiropractors, can have a beneficial effect on overall health.”

Chiropractic Care Eases 7-Year Old’s Asthma, Allergies, and Chronic Colds

Chiropractic Care Eases 7-Year Old’s Asthma, Allergies, and Chronic Colds
(01/29/2010). Chiropractic care is often thought of only in terms of relief from back and neck pain, but the plain truth is that individuals with many different health problems have been shown to respond to a regular program of chiropractic care, including blood pressure, fertility issues, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and now, according to a recent case study, a 7-year old boy’s problems with asthma, allergies, and chronic colds.
“There are certainly no guarantees with any course of care,” said Dr. Butler, a Centennial, CO-based chiropractor who strives to keep current with the latest research and developments in health and wellness. “And every case depends on the specific factors associated with that case. But we see, from time to time, individual case studies that give rise to hope for many.”
The 7-year old male in this particular case, as reported in a recent issue of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health, had a history of chronic colds, asthma, and allergies since infancy. He took prescription Alavert once a day for his allergies and Albuterol for asthma. He typically missed school one to two days a month because of his illness and had to see his medical doctor at least once a month. The boy underwent a thorough chiropractic exam, and his doctor observed postural deviations and restricted range of motion. Subluxations were also diagnosed as a result of the examination.
“A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function,” said Dr. Butler. “Many chiropractors, including myself, have non-intrusive technology that allows them to conduct thermal and surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist.” According to the published report,
...the patient was cared for using specific, low force adjustments . . . to address areas of vertebral subluxation in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral spine. Within two weeks of initiating chiropractic care, the patient was able to discontinue his allergy and asthma medications (as decided upon by his parents) and the use of his nebulizer. In the first five months after beginning chiropractic care, he had only wellness checkups at the medical doctor. In the past school year, the patient has not missed any days of school due to illness…

A child’s sense of smell is restored

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dr. Chris Butler, D.C. (303) 221.3900
(12-25-2009, Greenwood Village, CO). A recent article published in The Journal of Pediatrics, Maternal and Family Health reports the case study of an 11-year old female patient who had been diagnosed with chronic sinusitis and who had lost her sense of smell for one year.
The child’s mother indicated that her daughter had been undergoing “escalating medical and pharmaceutical recommendations” and that she wanted to explore more conservative options for helping the youngster. The girl’s symptoms included a persistent stuffy nose with concomitant difficulty in breathing and a lack of smell, even when her sinuses felt clear.
“Loss of olfaction, or the sense of smell, is a common occurrence with the condition known as sinusitis,” said Centennial-based Dr. Christopher Butler, D.C. “The inflammation associated with sinusitis and the build-up of mucus in the nasal cavity restricts the functioning of our olfactory cells.”
In the case of this 11-year old, the mother wanted to try chiropractic care as a way to avoid using the drug regimen usually prescribed. The examining chiropractor found the existence of cervical and sacral subluxations in the child’s spine.
“A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function,” said Dr. Butler. “Many chiropractors, including myself, have technology that allows them to conduct non-invasive thermal and Surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist.”
The patient underwent chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments. After the first adjustment, olfaction returned for six hours, as reported by the mother. After the second adjustment, this improvement lasted for 12 hours.
Two weeks after beginning chiropractic care, the patient was seen by her medical doctor, who noted a marked change for the better in the physical appearance of her sinuses. Chiropractic care was continued, and elimination of the subluxations and full restoration of the child’s sense of smell was obtained after just three months. The patient and her parents decided to end all medications, and elected to continue chiropractic care on a periodic basis to monitor subluxations and obtain adjustments as necessary. The child’s restoration of her olfactory senses has continued without interruption for more than four years.
“This is just one case study,” explained Dr. Butler, and more studies are needed before any absolute conclusions can be drawn. But it is an important step in helping patients to understand the options that are available to them in their health care.”

How Does The Immune System Work?
Posted on 2009-10-03 22:24:01
Our body's defenses protect us from microbe invasion in many ways. For example, the skin not only shields us from attack, but it also hosts billions of friendly bacteria that destroy harmful strains that often contaminate its surface. This system works well unless harsh chemicals and soaps drastically alter natural conditions on the outside of the body.
Another line of defense, saliva, is antiseptic, as is mucus secreted by the lining along the digestive and urinary tracts. If you breathe in the microbes, mucus in the sinuses and the bronchiole tubes may catch them before they go deeper into the body cavity. Tears take care of those germs that find their way onto the eyes.
But what if the gastric, especially hydrochloric acid, doesn't completely protect you from microbes that are swallowed? Friendly bacteria in the colon will take care of them, if these friends have not been killed by antibiotics.
When these shields fail, both microbes and toxins can get into the blood and here is where the immune system goes quickly into action. Invading germs carry "markers" on their surfaces to help the immune system identify them as aliens. Once detected, nearby cells send out signals that alert the rest of the body (via the nervous system).
At first, interferon is produced by each cell under attack. This chemical temporarily holds the enemy at bay until the immune system can calculate more precisely what it is fighting. The body is so efficient that it does not arm itself against every possible microbe invader in nature. Instead, it is ready with manufacturing machinery and spare parts at strategic points to produce tailor-made weapons and specially trained soldiers to meet each particular threat. Otherwise, the immune system would be so massive and costly to maintain that you probably would not have much energy left to do anything but breathe, eat and sleep!
